Massachusetts AFL-CIO Announces Endorsement of Elizabeth Warren, Candidate for U.S. Senate

At a Thursday morning meeting to kick off the Massachusetts AFL-CIO State of the Union Conference, the state’s largest labor organization unanimously voted to endorse Elizabeth Warren, candidate for U.S. Senate. After an enthusiastic discussion about what the contested Massachusetts Senate seat means for the direction of this country, the group of nearly 70 union leaders representing approximately 400,000 working families from over 750 local unions threw its support and pledged its political education and mobilization resources to the candidate whose policy views favor working families on Main Street over destructive business tycoons on Wall Street.

State AFL-CIO President Steven A. Tolman said, “Throughout the early stages of her campaign, and in her leading role helping our President hold Wall Street and big business accountable, Elizabeth Warren has made it clear she sides with working families in the big issues of our time. We are certain that she understands not just the struggles of working families, not just the shortcomings of Wall Street and ultra-conservative ideology, but how her votes, and how the policies she’ll fight for will actually impact real working people in their lives every day.”

Elizabeth Warren proudly accepted the endorsement, saying, “I am honored to receive the endorsement of the hard-working men and women of the AFL-CIO. At every turn, the AFL- CIO stands with working families in Massachusetts and around the country. I look forward to working with their 400,000 members and their families to rebuild America’s middle class, create jobs, and strengthen our economy.”

Secretary-Treasurer Louis A. Mandarini, Jr. remarked, “This is a critical election that will determine the direction of this nation for generations to come. We are excited that Elizabeth Warren wants to take our country in the same direction that we do, towards more fairness, more equality, and more opportunity for people who work for a living.”

In a joint statement, Executive Vice Presidents Edward Collins, Edward Kelly, Charles Raso, Jennifer Springer and Veronica Turner expressed their enthusiasm and pledged to spend the next 10 months educating and mobilizing union members across Massachusetts: “The members we represent in the public, building and construction trades, industrial and service sectors are all in need of a U.S. Senator who will vote the way working families need them to vote, rather than simply speaking phrases they think working families want to hear. We are excited to educate working families in Massachusetts about Elizabeth Warren’s values, what she’ll fight for, and how she will vote in Washington, D.C.”
