Coalition for Social Justice/Coalition Against Poverty Action Alert

Please call your State Representative today and ask them to sign onto a letter, to help pass the Safer Alternatives Bill, and get toxics out of products. The letter, initiated by Representatives Jaime Eldridge, Steven Kulik and Tom Conroy, will ask Speaker Sal Dimasi to lead the House to pass the bill this session.

We need at least 100 Reps to sign this letter to really show House leadership that there is strong support! This will help the bill move out of committee and get a vote in the House so we can pass it this year.

Step 1: Make the call

Phone number: Dial 617-722-2000 (House switchboard) or Call office number (listed below)
Ask for: The Representative's legislative aide
Tell them:

I am a constituent of Representative ____________ and I'm calling in support of S-2481 - The Safer Alternatives Bill. I'm calling to ask him/her to sign on to Rep. Eldridge's letter in support of the bill.   If they can't tell you right then whether or not the Rep. will sign on say:

I'd like to get a call back to find out whether the Representative decided to do this or not.

Or, if your Representative is Jamie Eldridge, Tom Conroy, Steven Kulik, Jay Kaufman (the bill sponsor), or Frank Smizik (Chair of the Environment Committee) thank them for their support and hard work on this bill!

If you don't know who your Representative is you can go to http://www.wheredoivotema.com/ [1] and enter your address and then look for Representative in General Court.

(See below for Local legislator phone numbers and e-mails.)

Step 2: Tell us what you find out!

Report your call to dfastino@aol.com [2] or 508-982-3108.

Step 3: Ask others to call too

Your voice is crucial - but you know more people! Ask your friends, family, co-workers and anyone else you know in Massachusetts to call their State Reps. too. Multiply your voice to have an even bigger impact. The chemical industry opposition to this health protective bill must be overcome by vocal citizen support!

About the Safer Alternatives Bill

The Safer Alternatives Bill (S-2481 An Act to Promote Safer Alternatives to Toxic Chemicals), sponsored by Representative Jay Kaufman and Senator Steven Tolman, will establish a pragmatic, gradual approach to reducing health impacts from many toxic chemicals we are exposed to in everyday life. This approach targets the worst toxic chemicals in Massachusetts-chemicals that are currently replaceable with safer alternatives for many uses.

The bill mandates a careful process to evaluate alternatives and replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives where feasible. It also stimulates research and development on new technologies and solutions when a safer option is not currently workable. For workers and businesses, it proposes programs to assist in the transition, funded through a fee on toxic chemicals. It was passed unanimously by the Senate on January 29th. It is currently before the House Committee on Ways and Means.

Thank you for your support!

CSJ and CAP are teaming up with the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow (AHT) coalition to get toxic chemicals out of products.
